About our Haunt When I was younger I always wanted to put on a big Halloween haunt. Were I grew up in California there was a few home haunters that would put on there show for the neighborhood. Someday I would do the same. A lot of the inspiration came from going to professional haunts, most notably Knott's Scary Farm. Spooky World in Minnesota was another good one when they had it at Murphy's landing. Soon it came time for me to work my own magic. The Nightmare on Buffalo Street started in Jordan, MN as the Valley Green Haunt of Jordan. It was a combination of static props out of the 8x12 shed and backyard. It was a big hit there and I haven't even started building any real props yet. Of course my favorite setup was the Blair Witch project that I had made in the shed one year. Complete with Stickmen and the final scene from the movie. But in 2000, the real haunting began. When we moved from Jordan to Belle Plaine, I say an opportunity to put on a real haunt. There was space available to make this happen, the garage. In Jordan we did not have a garage and everything was outside. This would be the first year of the Nightmare. Strobes, fog machines and the vortex tunnel were the top props. The maze began as a narrow and only lit by a few black lights. This haunt was only the beginning of things to come. 2001 was the first year of air props. The pop I made scared just about everyone that came across it. Yet the coffin leaper was a disappointment. It never worked right and has been retired to this day. The endless hallway was another prop that everyone enjoyed. The crowds were getting larger too. 2002 was an emergence of 3 pop ups and the continued use of the popular endless hallway. The bottomless pit also made a return appearance from the year before. Brand new static props were used and new decor was made. Again the crowds started to get larger. 2003 saw the disappearance of the endless hallway and bottomless pit. One was due to it being damaged and the other retired. The newest prop of the year and most effective, was the drop downs. No one even knew what had happened until it was too late thanks to the talent. The First motor driven prop was made and work well all night long without a hitch. More Brand new static props were used. 2004 was the year of big changes. A new entrance and complete graveyard were made. New props were made like the magic mirror, Electric chair, grave crawler, pit to hell and room of terror. The room was the biggest and most successful prop. Nothing is better then scaring people in a locked room with the lights out. Many Brand new static props were used. My first Motor prop did die on Halloween night before it even got dark. 2005 will be even bigger then the year before. Many new air props, a guillotine, Entrance has been extended even more, Graveyard has grown, and many old props will return. Halloween is my Christmas and I wish it was longer then one night. It is even more gratifying that the community enjoys it as well. The 4th grade class of Belle Plaine elementary did a report on our haunt after the 2004 event. We have been featured in the Belle Plaine Herald on two occasions ( Click to see the articles 1 and 2 ). I am hopeful that I can continue to do what I enjoy and maybe someday have a more permanent location were I can scare the crap out of people. Ken Anderson Nightmare on Buffalo Street Creator |
